Hello.
So last week I headed over to Learning without Frontiers 2012 after a tip off that this was an event WYGU ought to be at.
LWF 12 is a ‘compelling exploration of our learning futures’, which, whilst sounding a little wooly, is a pretty accurate description of what I saw.
Some of the worlds most innovative tech companies were there demonstrating what they do for education at the bleeding edge, as well as lots of smaller ones too.
YRS, or www.youngrewiredstate.org was one of the latter that caught my attention. It wasn’t only because of the stormtrooper that guarded their inflatable tent, from Star Wars (of course) -a film that I have ACTUALLY never seen!..but what I saw inside.
Behind the curtain I saw about 20 young geeks (YRS terminology, not mine), bashing away at keyboards, writing code for an app to present at the end of the event. They were so talented, they were doing it there, live, in front of me, in real time, live.
I was amazed, and scared a little, as this type of development flare for code writing is WAY beyond even me ![]()
YRS are all about nurturing talent for coding from a very young age. They spot talent, then mentor, and run a ‘hack’ camp in the summer. They then showcase the talent to central Govt and industry. Wow.
I was well impressed, fantastic work guys!!
